On December 19, 1951, seven AC Spark Plug employees founded the Dort Industrial Employees Federal Credit Union with a $41.75 deposit. These original seven members of UAW Local 651 believed in the nationwide credit union movement of “people helping people.” This mission, to bond together, to help each other and the lives of their fellow co-workers, holds true today! The Dort Industrial Employees Federal Credit Union has come a long way serving our member-owners since 1951. The credit union has flourished not only in its efforts to serve its members, but to serve the community at large. Becoming a responsible corporate partner and trusted financial resource has always been at the center of the boards’, employees’ and members’ hearts. By 1984, because the credit union had experienced continuous growth, the name was changed to Dort Federal Credit Union to better reflect the many select employee groups and our expansion of branch locations. Since the credit union’s humble beginnings there has been a strong foundation of financial stability, safety, soundness, and consistent growth. This has provided the members of Dort Federal Credit Union a thriving financial cooperative that they can trust and rely on. We thank our loyal members for their long journey of commitment to building a stable and successful credit union!
In 2017, Dort Federal experienced another year of outstanding membership and record loan growth. More than 12,000 new members joined the credit union and we saw a loan portfolio value of more than $639 million. With this growth, the credit union’s leadership moved forward with the acquisition of property to build branches in the communities of Swartz Creek and Clio with a third location planned for a leased space in Owosso. We are excited to become a vital part of these communities as we open new branches.
Not only did Dort Federal have an outstanding financial year, we also contributed to the success of our communities more than ever before! More than $285,000 was donated to over 100 organizations such as Whaley Children’s Center, the YMCA of Greater Flint, Old Newsboys of Flint, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County, Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties, the Hurley Foundation, Habitat for Humanity of Lapeer County, the McLaren Foundation, and the Boys & Girls Club, just to name a few. For the first time, Dort Federal was the title sponsor of the Flint Junior Golf Association’s Annual Charity Golf Classic, where more than $16,000 was raised. The Flint Farmers’ Market Demo Kitchen sponsorship also continued for another year and we were honored to be the recipient of Grand Blanc Chamber’s prestigious Hometown Hero Award for outstanding community service.
A few highlights from 2017’s community events include the Davison Festival of Flags’ Color Me Davison 5k Run, the YMCA Santa Run, Fenton Jinglefest, Taste of Grand Blanc, Taste in Fenton, Lapeer Days, Movie Night at Lake Callis, and the Crim Fitness Foundation, Festival of Races.
On August 7, 2017, Member Appreciation Movie Day was successfully held at three local NCG Theaters, where more than 10,000 members received movie passes and Flint Firebirds tickets. Our members can look forward to a new and improved Movie Day experience in 2018!
2017 marked the third year of the continuing partnership with the IMS Hockey Corporation, the Flint Firebirds, and the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center to bring exciting hockey and quality entertainment to the people living in our communities. Dort Federal sponsored First Responders Night, providing a fun night of entertainment to our hometown heroes. After making the playoffs at the end of the 2016-2017 season the Flint Firebirds continued to grow their fan base and we look forward to a great 2018-2019 season!
We have come a long way since we were born in 1951! We appreciate our loyal and committed members, volunteers and employees who made this journey with us as we build for the future. Thank you for growing Dort Federal Credit Union into the strong, responsible and committed member-owned financial cooperative it is today!
